Breakin' the Law! Breakin' the Law!

|

Don't worry America, the Department of Homeland Security only breaks the law to keep you "safe."

The Homeland Security Department admitted Friday it violated the Privacy Act two years ago by obtaining more commercial data about U.S. airline passengers than it had announced it would.

Seventeen months ago, the Government Accountability Office, Congress' auditing arm, reached the same conclusion: The department's Transportation Security Administration "did not fully disclose to the public its use of personal information in its fall 2004 privacy notices as required by the Privacy Act."

Even so, in a report Friday on the testing of TSA's Secure Flight domestic air passenger screening program, the Homeland Security department's privacy office acknowledged TSA didn't comply with the law. But the privacy office still couldn't bring itself to use the word "violate."

I would say I was shocked, but I'm not. DHS lives in the fantasy world of 24 and Alias. If they were serious about being secure and not looking secure, they would listen to Bruce.

Fear

I don't care if you are afraid of terrorists. Your fear, rational or not, does not trump my rights as a US citizen. Please stop curling up in a fetal position and begging the government to tap your phone and read your e-mail. If you feel the need to give up your rights, then do so -- but do not give up my rights. I have not conceded. You do not speak for me. I will not throw away what is rightfully mine because of your fear.

Get a f*cking grip already.

That Whole "Torture" Thing

|

So...it's "back." It never really went anywhere. But it's getting play again. John McCain led the Senate to a 90-9 vote reaffirming that it's not something we should do, even though the White House threatened a veto. Now the White House seems like it will just ignore it and keep on doing it.

Which brings me to my first question. If it's so important to torture people for information, why are we killing them? Dead men tell no tales right? Ooooooh, it's to scare the others into talking. Riiiiiiiight.

Senate rejects tough new auto fuel economy measure; approves industry-supported alternative

H. JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer
Tuesday, July 29, 2003

The Senate rejected a proposal to require a sharp increase in automobile fuel economy Tuesday after concerns were raised that it would lead to a loss of auto industry jobs and limit consumer's ability to buy larger cars and SUVs.

By a 65-32 vote, the Senate turned back a proposal offered by Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., that would have required automakers to produce a fleet average of 40 miles per gallon by 2015, a dramatic increase from the current 27.5 mpg now required.
