The fact is that if Americans did some serious conservation, they could reduce consumption by 1/3. Since they use about 20 million barrels a day of petroleum, they could replace the production of both Iraq and Iran (Iran produces 4 million bbd and exports 2 of it) all by themselves, just by going on the kind of diet Europe did in the early 1980s. But the last politician who dared tell you that was Jimmy Carter and no one will ever, ever go on television and talk that way again, who aspires to hold public office.
I've been driving, a mid sized car,
I never hurt anyone
Is that a fact?
The price of gas keeps on rising
Nothing comes for free
Make like a stone, make like a plant
I can tell you, how this endsWe're going to win this
With spades and truncheons, guns and trowels
That is how the war will be won
Just swat the fly
Taking care of cars and bodies
Nothing ever comes for free
The ghosts are here, red white and blueI can tell you how this ends

so that's what all those divs are for...
I've decided to move patandkat.com over home-hosted DSL to Dreamhost. The weblog has made the move, but not much else. It will be nice to do a bit of a "spring cleaning" on the old box.
- Dave Gorman is doing gigs for The Daily Show.

Reza Aslan talks about the future in Iran
I'm declaring myself Present Without (official) Blogging...right after I finish this post.
In June I'm headed to Vancouver to attend the Summer JA-SIG conference. I will be participating in a panel for the first time. I'm quite excited about it as I have never done anything like this before. It is a bit nerve-racking to be labeled an "expert" though, especially when I will be sitting alongside the names in uPortal/CAS development.
I did submit an application to be a freelance writer for Infinite Loop over at Ars. I haven't heard back, so I'm just going to assume I was filed in the "don't call us, we'll call you" bin. It would have been fun, especially if I could have gotten paid to take cracks at Dvorak. Alas, it was not to be.
But back to not blogging... I'm going to try and automate posting of all the other stuff that I do on the internets, much like the "daily links" posts that come from my del.icio.us account, and by "try" I mean "think about trying but not actually doing." All that being said, I am doing a lot more blogging at work for uPortal and general "write this down we may need it later" type stuff.
If that is not enough Pat for all the Pat stalkers out there, you can follow me around on upcoming.org and Flickr. Enjoy.

awesome stop sign stickers
Dozens of high school students protested a temporary school policy forbidding students from displaying the U.S. flag — as well as flags from other countries — amid racial tensions following immigration rallies.

Pride no longer has definition
Everybody wears it, it always fits
A state invoked for the lack of position
Strength is the bait that keeps us so busy
If it's perforated, then I tear it to bits
All sense lost in the frenzy
They should never touch the ground
Irony is the refuge of the educated
Always complaining but they never quit
Cool's eternal, but it always dated
They should never touch the ground
It's not worth, it's the investment
That keeps us tied up in all these strings
We draw lines and stand behind them
That's why flags are such ugly things
That they should never touch the ground
