In today's online chat, Dan Froomkin took my question:
Chico, Calif.: Is there still a sense that, even though Rove and Company hit the "Rally Base" button hard and often, Bush is still trying to do what he thinks is best for the country?
Dan Froomkin: I think you have just asked one of the most important questions of the second term. It first came to me during all these Social Security events, where the White House was only letting in people who essentially agreed with Bush. Doesn't he seem himself as the president of all the people?
And Rove of course is at the febrile center of this question. As I wrote in my newly updated Who's Who in the White House recently, Rove, with his new deputy chief of staff duties, "is the poster child for how politics and policy have merged in the Bush White House. Traditionally, governing is a considerably different matter than running for office, where winning is everything. Not so with Rove. If he eventually starts losing, he could end up taking the blame for creating a divisive presidency, aimed more at achieving partisan goals than the common good. But if he keeps winning, he will be a kingmaker even as his boss becomes a lame duck -- and his legacy could be a GOP that is indeed the ruling party for decades to come."

<bapper> yeah, but look at all the cash he gets licensing his franchise!

Dear Cold Calling Sales People,
Please stop. I don't want any. I'm positive. Really. Stop.
Thanks,

Scott has posted from very nice panoramas. You will go there. You will go now.
This conference is going amazing well. It's only Monday and I've already talked to so many cool people and "old" friends. Best. Conference. Ever.
Well, except for the part where the demo I was doing ran into scheduled downtime of PeopleSoft. "Oops."
Pix coming "soon".
I'm heading to Baltimore Saturday for the uPortal Summer Conference.
That is all.

Is moderation illegal in this country or what?
Well, I guess Biden and Edwards are going to run for president in 2008. It also appears that they still think being Republican-lite will get them something. Attacking Howard Dean isn't going to win you any votes, fellas. All either of them had to say was exactly what Dean said:
Dean said later his comments did not refer to hard-working Americans, but rather to the failure of Republican leadership to address working-class concerns.
Don't let yourself get tied down by these inane little non-stories. Use it as a point to attack the failed policies of the party in power. Don't use it to promptly shoot your foot off. When the wagons are circled, you fire outward, not inward. There are already plenty of people shooting at us already.
Asked about Dean's remark about Republicans and honest living, GOP chairman Ken Mehlman told NBC's "Meet the Press": "I'm not sure the best way to win support in the red states is to insult the folks who live there. I think that a better approach might be to talk about the issues you're for."
Nice one Ken. Dean insults the GOP leaders in Washington and Ken spins it as Dean attacking Jim Bob in Red State USA. Maybe Ken will send Biden and Edwards a nice fruit basket for helping him throw darts at the DNC.
Another question to Biden and Edwards...who do you think got Dean into the position that he is in? Who do you want to vote for you in 2008? Biden being an entrenched power, I can at least understand why he is bothered by Dean. But what gives with Edwards? Mr. Outsider. He knows as well as Dean how little the people in power are currently doing to help Americans.
Oh, and to all those thinking that Dean lost his Midas touch, think again.
Update: Joe in DC seems to have some similar thoughts. Also, what Digby says.
Update: Edwards says "Nonsense!" Senator Biden, how about you?
