I'll save you the click, they don't validate.    I've run into trouble recently trying to make sites that validate.  When I specify a DTD, Mozilla will go "into" that rendering mode.  Unfortunately this was a site where I didn't do the design and there was the "it has to work in NS4" problem.

To people who comp web pages in Photoshop, it never occurs to them that somethings can't be done, or done everywhere, on the web.  "In Photoshop I just click this filter button and make the alpha mask..."  Yeah, I wish I could do that and have it look just like you comp, but I can't.

I don't have the option of telling people it can't be done.  I have to make do.  Sometimes I have to just make pages that are practically "one big jpeg" and it kills me.  I know that while it looks like it works and that everything is fine...it isn't.

Bush preaches democracy to China.

|

Bush preaches democracy to China. George W Bush ends a Chinese visit of little substance by extolling freedom and democracy in a speech broadcast across the country. [BBC News: world]

Where does he get off telling China they need more freedom when he is trying to make sure America has less freedom?  His right-hand man Cheney is flipping the American people the bird when we want to know more about how they were controlled by Enron.  His left-hand man Ashcroft is making sure that nobody says anything bad about the administration under the guise of patriotism and unity.  It infuriates me to no end to hear them preach about freedom while they try and make life miserable for people who don't follow the same god.  Their stance on gays is also something that really gets the blood boiling.

Yes, I do believe that George W Bush, or at least the people around him are trying to make sure that people in this country have less freedom.  Maybe he is just mad that even though he won the Presidency, he lost the popular vote.

Whatever the reasons, I can't wait for the next election so I can vote against him again.

Linux won't fail on the desktop because it isn't even competing there.  You've heard all the arguments before and I'm sure people would be quick to point to Star Office and Ximian Gnome or KOffice and KDE.  Both sets of offerings are excellent and I've used them both, I do currently run Ximian Gnome though.  They do not compete with Mac OS or Windows, pick any recent version that you want.

Frankly I don't see how a product whose direction is determined solely by engineers is competing with a product whose direction is driven by financial factors.  Again, this is not to say that either reason makes one product inferior, only that they don't really compete against each other.

Why bother with CSS?

|

Yesterday after brushing up on Dogma 2000, I had a thought. If you believe the Web is a come-as-you-are, we're-all-just-folks writing and reading environment, why bother with CSS? Serious question. Go ahead and flame me if you want, but the question is still there.   [Scripting News]

Well Dave, CSS is even more for the writer than the reader IMHO. I want to write in structure, not in design. I know that Radio/Manila themes handle this with ease already, and the CSS Theme will handle it even better ;-) I still believe that keeping design out of the structure allows me to easily move from format to format (with certain complicated tools of course).

When we were looking at writing internal documentation, we decided HTML was a "bad idea" and ended up going with docbook. We could create basic HTML, PDF, and PS from one XML file.

Would 'Publish to PDF' in Radio be a mind bomb?

This is not to insult the artists that actually have talent and care about their work and want to get it out to people.  On the contrary, these are the very people the labels are dicking over.  Of course, this has been said a million times already and I'm not really adding anything new to the dicussion so I'll shut up now.

This was SFO. The bustle of that airport that I was used to is gone. Unless you are actually getting on a plane, you aren't allowed more than barely inside the terminal. The security gate is a veritible barricade. At least two, sometimes three soldiers are on guard as well as the regular phalanx of "screeners". Not much has changed in the screener makeup, although they appeared to be more alert. However the usual loitering and barely conceled boredom remain. To be frank people, the security at SFO appears to have been hand picked from Fry's employees.

As for the soldiers. These are regular Army and Special Forces troops. Not National Guard, at least not at SFO. There was at least one black beret on duty. All packing M-16's. One lady went the wrong way into the security perimeter and set off the alarms. One guy unshouldered his weapon before a screener arrived at the scene to turn the woman around. Usually, if the troops are just on for show, they shoulder the rifle with the business end up. These guys have them barrel down, ready to use.

Never a happy place, the airport is some weird surreal land nowadays. People getting off planes look generally worried. People getting on look understandably nervous. I am only used to seeing military on guard when in Mexico.

I almost thought he was going to say, "...work". Which would have been funny. I live for the day when NS 4 is off the 'most support' chart. I'm not talking about breaking NS4 intentionally, but stop trying to make it do things it can't. If you can see read the information that should be good enough, right? The web has always been about providing information in a platform neutral way. This is why there standards were created. Now we (web monkyes) want to use these standards. Everyone bitches and moans when MS doesn't follow standards and yells that we shouldn't be forced to support their non-standard approach...well how about some fair play with NS4?

I don't see people still supporting Netscape 2.0 (often).
