October 2001 Archives
So I had my softball game tonight. We lost last week. We lost tonight. We lost for very different reasons. Last week most of the team got tanked before the game and was drinking during the game. It's hard to hit the middle ball, or the middle first baseman. This week we just got out-hit. These dudes were h u g e. They crushed the ball. It wasn't pretty...and even then we had the lead going into the last inning...when the promptly put up 7 runs to crush us.
Ouch. Guess the name Fall 2001 Champions wasn't a good choice after all.
Not a whole lot going on. Tried to get my vacation time down below 200 hours and almost got there. I think I'm going to loose 14 hours or something like that. While that sucks, it's better than loosing the 42 hours I would have if I didn't get my ass in gear and not go to work. Seems odd, I know...
My buddy Steven, in .au, is fighting his 30-somethings.
Today is going to be busy. Football on TV, mow the lawn, carve pumpkins and whatever else Kat has me do. Not bad for a Sunday. Maybe I will try and get another 100 or so CDs into DISCO.
So I'm taking two more days off this week to get my vacation time down. So what did I do? I spent most of it migrating user accounts and domains from one box to another. Joy.
The good part is that the new box is faster and has a newer version of RedHat on it, which makes certain things easier for me.
The thing that sucked is that even though I host this box on my DSL line for no charge to people, they still complain. Oh I'm sorry, you don't like the free server you are getting...okay...what was your login again?
rm -rf /home/luser
At least now I don't have to run my two home projects off port 8080 anymore:
Both are written in PHP and talk to a mysql database. I hope to migrate to postgresql soon...just because.
When it's time for action, you can hardly go wrong with kung fu. I cruised over to Dublin to catch Iron Monkey with Adam.
It was subtitled. Which I don't mind at all. The subtitles were nice and large, but my only complaint was that they were white. I like it when they use yellow with a black outline. I know it takes away from the movie, but it is much more readable. Of course, in this movie you really want to pay attention to the action because it's pretty rad. Choreographed by the same guy who did The Matrix.
Rating: Matinee
Next movie I really want to see is 'The One' with Jet Li. That looks like a killer big budget action flick. No pun intended.
Saw the latest Lord of the Rings trailer and to be honest I wasn't really that excited when I first heard about the movie, but this trailer has made a believer out of me. I'm there.
Saw Bandits last night. Pretty good flik. Although, I don't know if I like Bruce Willis in the sensitive male role. Maybe it's just me. Billy Bob Thorton was great. Man has he lost weight in the last few years. Anyway, Bandits gets a full price rating, but not an opening nite full price rating.
I've beeb pretty lax about writing the last few days. I was kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel and I wanted to see if I could build up some stuff to write about again. Guess it didn't work ;-)
I bought some tunes, but still don't have a Song of the Day for you.
I've been meaning to try and work on skull2. All I have to do is move over all of the websites people have been hosting at piratehaven.org and then setup apache to work with them all again. The only problem is that I have work during the day, then kat gets annoyed when I come home at sit in front of a computer. So I've been trying to not do that lately. Piratehaven is free. Lots of people donate time, hardware, and bandwidth...so if anyone complains too much I will have to BOFH them. But, that won't happen. I'm harder on myself than most other people are.
They don't mean quite so much, except you get to taunt your co-workers on irc. Okay, so that isn't quite true. I had a great time away from work...until I got the cell phone call. I was on my way to See Apocalyse Now Redux with Adam and Josh in Corte Madera. I was really scared that I was going to have to turn around, go home and try to fix something remotely. Luckily I had an answer I could give over the phone, then turn my phone off and go see a 4 hour movie.
I didn't have any voice mail when I got out so it must have gone well. Guess I will find out tomorrow.
The movie was good. They add a lot of stuff. It makes more sense now. Of course, I know why they had to cut some of it...that movie is just l o n g. But I think it's better now. Josh had never seen it so he said it made perfect sense to him and didn't see why we had trouble, albeit with the first theatrical release...
I don't have a song today either...maybe I should try to sell it as a "regular" thing. Hell, I haven't even been able to simply write here everyday, let alone find a special song for everyday. That goes against my whole 'stuck in a rut' nature anyway.
Next day off: Thursday
Finally, a slow week...well, slow enough that I'm taking Tuesday and Thursday off. Of course, Kat already has a ton of things I can do for her on my days off. Oh well, that is what being married is all about...or so I've been told.
I managed to buy some CDs last week, despite the RIAA being complete and utter assholes. The new Garbage CD [amazon] is...okay. The New Order single that just came out, Crystal [amazon], is pretty good...I'm looking forward to the full length album.
Launch.com seems to be having a better time of not chunking on their streaming music lately. This is good...I was afraid I was going to have to ditch them. I mean, I know the service is free and that I shouldn't complain...but this is something that I'm willing to pay for if the service were better and I've told them that. Or at least I sent them email to that topic. Yahoo! bought them so I'm sure they have plans to make money on them somehow. Of course, as I write this their site just cut me off. Also I'm sure one of their problems is that they have Windows Media and Real as their formats. Real sucks ass, and WM can only be streamed off a MS Server which can't scale to save it's life...oh well.
I've been workin' like a dog.
I should be sleepin' like a log.
This weekend is a Chico weekend. Mom turns 55 today.
Aca Taco here we come!
Funny how the grass is always greener on the other side. When you are busy you want to be lazy, when you are lazy you want to be busy. When you are marrier you want to be single, when you are single you want to be married.
This song by Pop Will Eat Itself [amazon], one of the greatest bands in my list of all time bands, pretty much sums it up in so many ways. After something sucky, it is good to be back home...but then after a while you need to get away from home. With "the project" over...it's good to be back "home". But I know I will need another "project" to keep me busy pretty soon. I'm just a glutton for punishment.
Home [mp3]
Good to be back home... in the pubs with the people that you love
And a crawl around the clubs getting high
GTBBH... all alone when you're running up the phone bill
Trying to raise the cents for the rent
GTBBH... with your kid and you ask him what he did
Well, he burned the house down to the ground
GTBBH... with the wife and to have some kind of life
And to wake up and break up again
Good to be back home... (x2)
GTBBH... on a love tip, gotta keep a grip
When the ship's going down, you can flip
GTBBH... off the junk food, seen as a clean dude
And instill a clean bill of health
GTBBH... hear the sounds of the city all around
And the music, the new licks you found
GTBBH... at the Lane for a relegation game
As the boys get caned once again
Good to be back home... (x4)
I'm not homeless, I'm just restless
I get itchy feet and reckless
I've been travelling so long, cracking
I don't really know what is happening
Here is there is anywhere and home is my ass on a chair
Then I wish I was gone and then I wish I was home
Then I wish I was gone (AWOL) then I wish I was home (AWOL)
AWOL, AWOL
Then I wish I was gone (AWOL) then I wish I was home (AWOL)
Hello home...
So tonight I start on the 2nd season of softball. My ankle is strong enough to run in a straight line so I can hit and run to first, then get a pinch runner to go from there. They want to play me a 3rd, so I may be taking some off the face tonight.
The games start at 8 in the Prescidio at Scotts Field. On the drive home it was foggy and windy at the Golden Gate...but of course it's 85 here in SR.
Wonder what I will break tonight...?
